Polymarket is the dominant decentralized prediction market platform, praised for its clean UI, deep liquidity, and ability to turn real-world events into tradable outcomes across politics, sports, economics, and crypto. The platform has achieved mainstream adoption and is valued at billions, with strong partnerships including Yahoo Finance, Chainlink, and the UFC. However, it faces recurring controversies around market resolution integrity—particularly disputes involving UMA voters, retroactive rule changes (notably the MicroStrategy Bitcoin sale market), and allegations of insider trading and information asymmetry that have eroded trust among some users. While many view it as an innovative tool for collective intelligence and sentiment tracking, critics emphasize the risks of manipulation and the gambling nature of the platform.

“Great product, still worth mentioning drawbacks”Polymarket itself is a great product & the biggest prediction market out there. However, there are several concerning things about the platform: - UMA. Basically the project’s resolution mechanism. If there is a dispute, UMA voters determine the final result. After that, Polymarket settles the market & pays out the winning shares. The problem is that UMA voters can vote in favor of the most profitable outcomes for themselves, rigging the results (and that's what they do from time to time). - Bet manipulation. Some markets have been obviously rigged, like the recent one on whether MicroStrategy would sell any Bitcoin. Even though they sold, due to a change in the market description, the bet will likely resolve to No (99.9% rn). - Ethical & moral questions. Some markets involve speculation on wars, human lives & other sensitive topics. A red line should be drawn here & not crossed. - Although Polymarket claims to be a prediction platform, some markets are essentially pure gambling & thus turn the platform into a bookmaker. Taking all of this into account, I remain carefully optimistic about the actual product (everything has its drawbacks, though I really hope all of these issues will be resolved). But one huge disclaimer & reminder: never bet more than you can afford to lose. I have seen a lot of “obvious” markets resolve in favor of 2-3% probability outcomes (or even lower) & people losing huge amounts of money.Valerka Mops · 1430· 5mo ago · neutral24
