Co-founder of Bankless, known for explaining Ethereum and crypto through long-form podcasting, but widely criticized for undisclosed paid promotions, token dumps, extracting grants through multiple entities, rugging their own token, and posting divisive anti-Muslim and pro-war rhetoric that contradicts the platform's stated ethos of decentralization and community empowerment.

“David hoffman: Hated or liked?”My Take on Bankless & The Advisory Controversy. Used to be a massive Bankless maxi back in 2020/2021 - consumed their content religiously during the peak bull run euphoria. David's takes were hitting different back then. But bear markets expose everyone's true colors. When funding dried up, even the most principled brands made compromises they'd never consider during fat times. Bankless wasn't immune. The real damage came from their advisory roles with both Starknet and zkSync leading up to their TGEs. Whether by design or incompetence, both projects absolutely botched their airdrop distributions - and Bankless was directly involved in shaping those mechanisms. The community backlash was nuclear-level brutal, and rightfully so. When you position yourself as "bankless" champions of decentralization then help orchestrate airdrops that felt like retail getting rugged by VCs and insiders... the optics are catastrophic. Look, I get it - bear markets force impossible decisions. Companies need revenue to survive. But when your brand is built on crypto principles and you compromise those exact principles for a bag, the trust damage is exponential. Not calling them scammers or anything - just acknowledging the reality that their reputation took massive hits from these moves. Time will tell if they can rebuild that credibility, but the zkSync/Starknet situations definitely left a permanent stain. Staying neutral on this one because everyone's human and bear markets make people do questionable things. But the receipts are what they are.SmartecVitalik · 1304· 1y ago · neutral3
