They are the first 10k project completely on chain, which was a pretty big deal at the time as most NFT projects relied on IPFS for high resolution image projects. Yeah they're ugly as hell, but they're the truest form of NFTs because of their innovation in being fully on chain, which sets them apart from 99.9% of projects.
