Sophon is a lifestyle blockchain built on zkSync's ZK Stack, designed to make crypto invisible by embedding it into gaming, entertainment, social apps, and everyday activities through features like a gamified crypto card, gasless transactions, and a Social Oracle using zkTLS for privacy-verified data. The project raised over $70M and delivered a well-received airdrop to ZKsync power users, earning praise for rewarding real on-chain activity and thoughtful product design with strong UX. However, it faced significant momentum loss after launching its L2 in late 2024—the chain shut down after nine months due to high maintenance costs and lack of differentiated value, with the team pivoting to build consumer apps on Base instead. Community sentiment is mixed: supporters highlight the clear vision, solid tech, and focus on mass adoption over hype, while critics point to the failed L2 execution, low user adoption, token price collapse of 80%+ post-launch, and accusations of raising capital on hype without delivering sustainable products.

“sophon the baren tree”Crypto is in a strange cycle where many projects keep pivoting to the latest trend instead of delivering real products. Sophon feels like a clear example of that. Hopefully, this hype-driven phase ends soon, allowing substance to matter more than narratives.

“sophOFF”Crypto feels stuck in a strange cycle right now. Every few months a new narrative appears, projects rush to attach themselves to it, and suddenly years of previous promises seem to disappear overnight. One day a team is convinced that building an L2 is the future, the next day that vision is quietly abandoned in favor of whatever trend is currently attracting attention and capital. To me, Sophon has become one of the clearest examples of this pattern. What started with a specific direction and set of expectations has gradually turned into a series of pivots that make it difficult to understand what the long-term vision actually is. Innovation and adaptation are important, but constantly changing course without delivering meaningful results raises questions about whether there was ever a real conviction behind the original plan. The industry desperately needs a shift back toward execution instead of narratives. Hype can create attention, but it cannot replace products, users, or real value. Hopefully this phase comes to an end sooner rather than later, and the market starts rewarding teams that consistently build rather than those that simply move from one trend to the next. When that happens, projects with little substance will naturally fade away, leaving room for builders who are actually creating something worth staying for.

“Good One”Sophon is a good one. My point of view they work well. They build novel consumer experiences in crypto & ai. It's good in this time.

“Airdrop carried it”Aside from the airdrop, Sophon has low users, low TVL, and limited utility

“An Interesting Project to Watch”I first heard about Sophon while exploring consumer-focused blockchain projects. The idea immediately caught my attention because it takes a different approach from many infrastructure-heavy projects. I'm still learning about everything the team is building, but I like following projects that are trying to make Web3 easier for everyday users. It will be interesting to see how Sophon develops as the ecosystem grows. For now, it's a project I enjoy keeping an eye on.

“Closing their L2 but moving to base”I was very happy to receive the airdrop but my mistake was to stake it as i am a real holder supporting the projects that airdropped me. I got nothing in return for staking and seen the price continue to go lower to max pain. Now project is sunsetting and they announced to move to base (this might be a good thing?) curious to see where this goes. Lesson learned i will sell 50% next time

“Quietly Building for Mass Adoption”Sophon has built a positive reputation by focusing on consumer-friendly blockchain infrastructure rather than short-term hype. Its Layer 2 network emphasizes low fees, smooth user experience, and applications designed to bring mainstream users on-chain, earning praise for its long-term vision and steady execution. Like many emerging ecosystems, Sophon has faced skepticism around timelines, token expectations, and airdrop discussions. However, the broader community sentiment remains favorable, with many recognizing the team's consistent development, strategic partnerships, and commitment to delivering real products instead of relying solely on marketing. Overall, Sophon is viewed as one of the more promising Layer 2 projects. Its focus on scalable infrastructure, user experience, and sustainable ecosystem growth has positioned it as a project with strong long-term potential in the evolving Web3 landscape.

“High-capital fundraising through hype loops with limited post-airdrop traction and product delivery”Sophon presents a complex case within the L2 landscape, leaning toward an unsatisfactory outlook despite its initial community distribution. On the positive side, the network is recognized for delivering a surprisingly successful airdrop that temporarily satisfied retail expectations and kept its early platform ratings afloat. Positioned as an entertainment and gaming-focused Web3 ecosystem, it initially drew attention for its transaction speeds and interface. However, a closer analytical look reveals significant reasons for skepticism. Community members heavily criticize Sophon's capital generation tactics, highlighting that the team leveraged the ZKSync ecosystem hype to aggressive sell network nodes, raising over $63 million without delivering subsequent ecosystem maturity. Critics describe Sophon as an infrastructure model that "bears no fruit," pointing out a pattern of chasing short-term narrative cycles and pivoting directions rather than shipping sustainable products. Weeks after the initial rollout, the project shows stagnant on-chain traction, leading reviewers to view it as just another redundant L2 layer that struggles to retain users once the deployment rewards dry up.

“Promising Vision, Still Waiting for Long-Term Proof”Sophon introduces an interesting approach by combining entertainment, consumer applications, and blockchain infrastructure. The vision is compelling, and the team has attracted significant attention within the ecosystem. However, the project's long-term adoption and ecosystem growth are still developing, making it too early to judge its lasting impact. It has strong potential, but I prefer to remain neutral until user traction and sustained execution become clearer over time.

“Radical Strategy, Watching Execution”Correct macro thesis that infra is commoditized, but the team must now prove they can ship viral apps like Pyre.

“Sophon Innovative Vision with a Pragmatic Pivot to Consumer Apps”Sophon started as a ZK powered Layer 2 chain focused on consumer experiences in crypto and AI. It raised significant funding (around $60M+) and aimed to make blockchain feel seamless for everyday users through apps rather than just infrastructure. The team recently announced they're decommissioning their own chain due to low traction only 100-200 daily users and minimal fees against high operating costs and shifting fully to building apps on Base (Coinbase's L2) Their first product, Pyre is a gamified payment experience where transactions can involve mini-games or pay and play mechanics. Revenue from apps is planned to support $SOPH token buybacks and burns. The pivot shows willingness to adapt rather than double down on sunk costs, which feels pragmatic in an oversaturated L2 space. Some community members appreciate the focus on real products and consumer-friendly ideas. Others point to the token's poor performance since launch and question the earlier node sales and hype around building yet another chain.Overall, it comes across as a legitimate project with creative ambitions, but execution has faced clear challenges. Early-stage crypto apps carry real risks, and results will depend heavily on whether Pyre and future products gain actual users.
