Sophon is a lifestyle blockchain built on zkSync's ZK Stack, designed to make crypto invisible by embedding it into gaming, entertainment, social apps, and everyday activities through features like a gamified crypto card, gasless transactions, and a Social Oracle using zkTLS for privacy-verified data. The project raised over $70M and delivered a well-received airdrop to ZKsync power users, earning praise for rewarding real on-chain activity and thoughtful product design with strong UX. However, it faced significant momentum loss after launching its L2 in late 2024—the chain shut down after nine months due to high maintenance costs and lack of differentiated value, with the team pivoting to build consumer apps on Base instead. Community sentiment is mixed: supporters highlight the clear vision, solid tech, and focus on mass adoption over hype, while critics point to the failed L2 execution, low user adoption, token price collapse of 80%+ post-launch, and accusations of raising capital on hype without delivering sustainable products.

“A Project That Makes Crypto Feel Less Complicated”One thing I like about Sophon is that it focuses on making the user experience simple instead of expecting everyone to be a blockchain expert. As someone who still learns something new every day in crypto, I appreciate projects that don't make basic tasks feel confusing. The team seems to be building with long-term users in mind rather than just chasing short-term hype. Smooth interactions, low-friction design, and a clear vision make Sophon feel welcoming for both newcomers and experienced users. There's still plenty of room to grow, but the direction is encouraging. If the team keeps delivering at this pace and continues listening to the community, I believe Sophon has the potential to become a platform that many people enjoy using—not because it's complicated, but because it simply works.

“nice Defi project on ZK”Sophon is carving out distinct niche as consumer-grade L2, leveraging zkSync’s ZK Stack and Validium architecture to deliver gasless, Web2-like UX optimized for gaming, social, and lifestyle applications. The team’s clean airdrop execution preserved community sentiment, though on-chain metrics like active users and TVL still reflect early-stage traction rather than proven product-market fit. What differentiates Sophon is its focus on verified digital identity and data monetization, positioning it as a practical bridge between mainstream user behavior and Web3 value creation. That said broader L2 thesis faces real structural headwinds, particularly given ongoing debates around rollup economics and Ethereum’s evolving data availability and fee-sharing models. As mainnet upgrades continue to reshape security assumptions and value accrual, Sophon will need to prove it can generate sustainable utility beyond early investor liquidity. I remain cautiously optimistic -especially around near-term catalysts like the Sophon card but view this as a long-term infrastructure bet that requires close monitoring of both execution milestones and Ethereum’s macro trajectory.

“Good start, disappointing follow-through”The airdrop was a nice surprise, but things haven't lived up to the early hype. Progress has felt slow, staking wasn't rewarding, and user traction seems limited. The move to Base could be a fresh start, but I'll wait and see before getting excited again.

“Pivot pivot pivot”Raised $70M+ to build an L2 to then pivot to Base two years later with the thesis of "the world has one too many L2s already". The pivot to directly building consumer apps rather than focusing on infrastructure is not a bad idea. We will see how this plays out for the Sophon team

“Worth Following Over Time”I came across Sophon through the crypto community and decided to learn more about the project. While am still exploring the ecosystem, I appreciate projects that have a clear direction and are willing to experiment with new ideas. It's still early but the concept is interesting enough for me to keep following its progress. will be interested to see how the project evolves and what it delivers in the future.

“project consumer crypto từng build chain ZK nhưng giờ pivot sang studio app trên Base”Mình thấy Sophon raise vốn khá tốt, focus entertainment và onboarding user mới qua app vui vui, nhưng việc shut down chain riêng để migrate sang Base làm mình hơi lăn tăn về long-term vision.

“Honest pivot, unproven bet”Sophon had the team, the funding, and a real thesis but the chain never got traction, and SOPH lost 95%. They called it publicly and moved to Base to build consumer apps, which I respect. Pyre looks interesting. Node holders got burned, and the new revenue model is still hypothetical. I trust the people more than the token right now.

“Great vision and a smooth experience”I've had a great experience with Sophon so far. I really like its focus on making blockchain feel invisible, with fast, gasless transactions and a user friendly experience... The technology seems solid, and I appreciate that it's targeting gaming and consumer apps instead of just another DeFi ecosystem. While I know some people question its long term adoption, I think the project has a strong vision and enough innovation to stand out if the team keeps building. I'm excited to see where Sophon goes next....

“Hype did not match the reality.”Had genuine expectations from Sophon early on the concept of targeting crypto consumers as an audience for an L2 was an interesting angle. But the execution fell flat. Trusted voices in the community were bullish on it... which made the disappointment worse when it did not deliver. Another reminder that strong narratives do not always translate into strong products.

“Shifted from infrastructure to consumer apps”Sophon started as a ZK‑powered Layer 2 chain but is now shifting direction. The team announced they are sunsetting the Sophon Chain and moving fully into building apps on Base. Their first product, Pyre, introduces a new idea called “entertainment finance,” aiming to mix crypto with consumer experiences. This pivot shows they believe infrastructure chains no longer hold as much value compared to apps. The SOPH token is evolving too, with its old gas and staking model becoming obsolete. Community reactions are mixed, with some supporting the change and others worried about losing the chain’s original vision. The project still has strong visibility, with over 148K followers and active reposts from major accounts. Overall, Sophon is taking a bold step by leaving behind its chain to focus on apps, but success will depend on whether users embrace Pyre and future products.

“Not every product fits in the first attempt”sophon rebuilding is a lesson and a reminder that if users aren't interested in you product, you have two choice. Improve or rebuild with a different approach

“L2 chain”Sunsetting their ZK L2 chain and going all-in on consumer apps is refreshingly pragmatic. Many projects cling to infrastructure dreams with low adoption; Sophon admitted the chain didn't achieve the desired product-market fit and redirected resources toward what actually matters - real products users will love.
