From 31 activities · Apr 2026Friend.tech launched as a promising SocialFi experiment allowing users to trade keys to private chat rooms tied to X accounts, generating $1M in fees daily at peak. The project rapidly collapsed due to poor execution, privacy leaks exposing over 100k wallet addresses, bot exploitation, and leadership abandonment—the team extracted $44M in fees while the platform froze. Critics describe it as a fee extraction and ponzi-like scheme that prioritized influencer dumping and short-term speculation over sustainable community value, leaving users disappointed after initial hype faded to a ghost town.

It turned social presence into a market and made people think twice about what “value” in Web3 really means. It’s not perfect, of course. There’s been hype, cycles, and some clear flaws in the mechanics. But the core idea tokenizing relationships, creating private spaces with public stakes was bold and different. What I like most is that it didn’t try to pretend to be something it’s not. It embraced the social degen energy, played with real emotions, and showed us how messy and interesting crypto + clout can be. Even after the hype cooled down, I think Friend.tech left a mark. And I wouldn’t be surprised if future social apps quietly borrow its DNA

Icarus · 1258· 2mo ago · negative0“I don 't know what are they doing right now”Back in late 2023, friend.tech sparked massive hype by letting users trade "keys" to private chat rooms, but today it has faded into a quiet ghost town. Once airdrops ended, the hyper-speculative model collapsed, and the team renounced control, leaving the project effectively orphaned. This swift decline exposed the core flaw of financializing human relationships, where short-term farming replaced genuine community value and left the broader SocialFi sector struggling. Ultimately, friend.tech stands as a cautionary tale proving that temporary hype cannot sustain an ecosystem, while still offering a vital lesson for future Web3 social platforms.
