From 31 activities · Apr 2026Friend.tech launched as a promising SocialFi experiment allowing users to trade keys to private chat rooms tied to X accounts, generating $1M in fees daily at peak. The project rapidly collapsed due to poor execution, privacy leaks exposing over 100k wallet addresses, bot exploitation, and leadership abandonment—the team extracted $44M in fees while the platform froze. Critics describe it as a fee extraction and ponzi-like scheme that prioritized influencer dumping and short-term speculation over sustainable community value, leaving users disappointed after initial hype faded to a ghost town.

juan+ · 1292· 2mo ago · negative0“Great initial concept, but completely ruined by poor execution and team abandonment.”Friend.tech kickstarted the SocialFi movement on Base with incredible momentum, but its demise was swift and inevitable. The lack of meaningful product updates, continuous bot exploitation, severe privacy leaks, and an erratic leadership team led by Racer ultimately destroyed user trust. Extracting millions in fees while abandoning the platform post-token launch left the entire community holding the bag. A textbook example of how not to manage a Web3 product.

The app's concept sounded intersting at first, but the overall experence felt confusing and overly focused on speculation rather than meaningful social interection. The user interface is not very intuitive, making it difficult for new users to navigate and understand how everything works.

The mass were having fun, and the hype was there. If only they continued it, it would’ve probably replaced Twitter hehe..

The old social token buzz crashed hard and never recovered, leaving it irrelevant in a space full of better plays. Skip this one; it's a reminder of failed experiments dragging down feeds.

(❖,❖) DUDU.base.eth · 1347· 6mo ago · negative0“From hype to collapse, inside story of Friend.tech”Big buzz, but really no fairness on the backend. Friend.tech had a strong start, garnering attention throughout the space, but the momentum didn't hold. Once they gave up on their blockchain route and took away fees, engagement plummeted. Friend token was decimated, developers lost interest and the excitement fizzled almost overnight That appeared to be a breakthrough concept at first but then you could see things going wrong. The system was heavily weighted in favor of insiders, bots took over the flow and big players overwhelmed small users

Before it there were others like Steemit and Bitclout, but none achieved the mindshare and TVL as big as friend tech. Not sure what exactly went wrong, but one day we wake up and the experiment is closed. Good thing is that they at least setup a way to withdraw our funds via contract. And off course that it inspired the creation of Ethos network to some extent.

Siddartha Gupta · 1344· 7mo ago · negative0“Good idea, but mostly a grift for KOLS”With friend.tech you bought keys that gave you access to content posted by your favourite crypto twitter influencer on their friend-tech platform. The keys could be bought and sold in similar fashion to your favourite cryptocurrency. It was a good idea, but ultimately it benefited influencers who would buy a tonne of their own keys on sign up and then sell them after they had pumped - max extraction. The content you actually received from the influencers was very measly if not non-existent.
