An innovative digital artist known for thematic, relatable work and experimental NFT mechanics. Their latest releases—mementos and death & taxes—feature novel structures like vaulted value systems and on-chain game mechanics that align incentives between creator and collector, though the game's escalating tax system and off-chain bailout trading have sparked debate about fairness and design intent.

“sold in game items off chain”sold "bailouts" in the on-chain game "death and taxes", off chain, in exchange for "mementos" nfts, which are an nft that can be burned for .0258eth each. why does it matter? to the non game player, quick answer- 1 Bailout = 2 days of "Taxes" All players must pay a daily tax, or be subject to an audit, and if left unpaid, a "kill" of your nft, resulting in exiting the game. Taxes started at .00069, and increase by .00069 each day of the game. taxes at the time these bailouts started happening were approx .07 per day for a bailout value of .14eth (2 days of tax) 93.1% of taxes paid go to a treasury that the final 69 NFTS remaining will split. 6.9% of taxes go as a fee to modest. each bailout granted via the memento redemption directly transferred ETH to Modest, and starved the treasury of those payments. his own description of requirements to be offered a bailout, paraphrased from his full tweet here: (anyone)"< can request a bailout > on site, thru DMs, on here. whatever. just have a good/funny/sad/rational reason." - https://x.com/m0dest___/status/2065295625382490400 notice, he doesn't mention they are for sale later posted that a player had "negotiated a deal" to trade Mementos for bailouts: "citizen 3748 negotiated a deal to trade 42 mementos for bailouts. ridiculous or smart?" - https://x.com/m0dest___/status/2072842331821097161 at the time of writing, bailouts have officially been ended, the tax split going forward will be redirected at "buying" citizens out of the game I didn't want to write this until the game is over. as i am still very much playing the game, but if (my bags) are keeping me from an honest critique, im not sure what is the point of any of this. The review is not a salty take on a game that has dragged on for longer than most anticipated, or an indictment of the art, or any other mechanic of the game. this is strictly a Negative Review based on the facts that Bailouts were sold in relative secrecy, with no transparency, possibly out of ignorance, in a game where any Reasonable player would assume that off chain deals transferring Eth to the creator would not be permitted.Beamish · 1784· 2mo ago · negative61
“on epochs and evasion / a few of you have asked about the epoch rollover, so here's exactly what's happening. the g...”> on epochs and evasion / > > a few of you have asked about the epoch rollover, so here's exactly what's happening. > > the game runs in daily epochs. taxes are due each epoch, and you can only be audited if you haven't paid yesterday's. what some players discovered is that a transaction submitted right at the edge of an epoch - because of how ethereum block timestamps work- pays into the next epoch, effectively evading taxes for a single epoch. and what other players discovered is the counter: front-running that transaction with an audit at higher gas. > > was this designed in? no. it wasn't something we factored in. it emerged from the simplicity of the rules plus the physics of the chain itself. and i wouldn't have changed anything. an audit window or a more complicated tax mechanism would have made the game safer and worse - and some version of this edge would still exist, because it lives in how ethereum keeps time, not in our code. > > was anyone given an advantage? no. nobody was told anything. the contract has been public since the beginning; some people simply read it harder. that's not information asymmetry - that's a game rewarding the exact skill it was built to reward. this is a game about evading taxes. someone evaded. someone else audited them for it. i find that beautiful, and i won't pretend otherwise. > > on timing: epochs roll at 0:00 UTC because it's the universal clock, not anyone's home turf. every timezone finds it inconvenient in its own way. > > and the answer to the question underneath the question: no, the rules won't be changing. they can't. immutability isn't a limitation of this project - it is the project. > > also i hope you’re ready. because it’s almost time to show you what has been here all along.
