Towns is a Web3 social infrastructure platform built on Base that enables token-gated, on-chain communities with encrypted messaging, ownership mechanics, and monetization features—often compared to Discord but with blockchain integration. The product has attracted genuine users who appreciate its clean interface, community focus, and features like tipping and membership NFTs, though adoption remains concentrated within niche Web3 communities. Post-TGE, the project faced significant challenges including disappointing airdrop distributions, token price decline of over 90%, user retention issues after mercenary farmers departed, and slower technical performance compared to competitors—leaving it positioned as a solid concept with real product foundation but struggling to maintain momentum and broader appeal.

“highly controversial project”a project that started as a web3 version of discord in summer 2024. they looked cool at launch and introduced a few things over time, but after a year they still haven’t delivered any meaningful updates that would put them anywhere close to discord’s level. i don’t know anyone who seriously tried to move their chat from discord or telegram to towns, even for a couple of days. there were weird listing delays, but in the end, they worked out, since the listing happened not during the worst time of the year, but probably the best. the drop itself feels mixed. in general, everyone who joined early or at least did something got $10-200. farmers also did okay, with even small farms pulling in around $1k. but there are questions about the OG user drop - why did a few thousand dollars go to afk accounts that just happened to join the right town early? why was i supposed to somehow guess the “correct” town a year ago, when everyone just followed inflow referral links and landed in their towns? why did they cut the community’s share of the drop? why not just allocate it properly to early users? overall, the project barely has a product that could keep it afloat in the long term. it paid out decently to those who for some reason believed in it, and gave a small life-changer to the lucky ones who ended up in the right town. i think people will forget about towns pretty soon, and honestly i’m just glad i won’t be seeing it pop up in my feed anymore.no · 1290· 1y ago · neutral7
