Towns is a Web3 social infrastructure platform built on Base that enables token-gated, on-chain communities with encrypted messaging, ownership mechanics, and monetization features—often compared to Discord but with blockchain integration. The product has attracted genuine users who appreciate its clean interface, community focus, and features like tipping and membership NFTs, though adoption remains concentrated within niche Web3 communities. Post-TGE, the project faced significant challenges including disappointing airdrop distributions, token price decline of over 90%, user retention issues after mercenary farmers departed, and slower technical performance compared to competitors—leaving it positioned as a solid concept with real product foundation but struggling to maintain momentum and broader appeal.

“Feels like it actually gets what Web3 communities need”I’ve been using Towns for a bit now, and it really does feel like the next step for onchain community spaces. It’s familiar, like Discord, but gives you more control and actually integrates crypto in ways that make sense. Things like token-gating and tipping feel natural, not forced. It’s early, but there’s something real here - curious to see how it evolves.

“Uncultured”They used their community and when it came time to reward them, the team rewarded themselves, their families and their friends instead, leaving the rest of the community to fight for scrap.

“Interesting Protocol”Still a new user here, but kinda cool to create a tight community here, and top up that, its stored on chain. Still need more optimization because site kinda laggy. In short it's like a discord but on chain.

“Owning the Spaces Where We Connect”I’m supporting Towns App because I believe group chats should belong to the people using them, not platforms that can change rules overnight. What excites me is the idea that with Towns Protocol, communities can finally own their conversations and build culture on their own terms. It feels different from just another app, it feels like a step toward digital spaces that are truly ours.

“App powered by its own protocol for group chats, giving users full control to build and manage online communities.”towns is a web3 chat app where users build, own encrypted communities, earn via subs, gated NFTs and more. big plus that it powered by its protocol. built by Here Not There Labs, the co-founder also created Houseparty, which was bought by Epic Games and added to Fortnite. team includes folks who’ve worked at Google, dYdX, Berachain and sound.xyz. on the downside, they talk a lot about rewards and freedom in a way that feels a bit too pushy. kinda gives the vibe that once the airdrop’s done, people might lose interest.

“A Space Where Web3 Communities Can Breathe Freely”Towns is one of the few projects that truly offers a native solution for onchain communication. It’s lightweight but includes important features like subscriptions, customizable rooms, and built-in crypto integration. Feels a bit like Discord, but with a focus on transparency and user data ownership. Still a bit raw in places, but the core idea is strong.

“Building the Future of Decentralized Communities”If you’ve ever chatted with the Towns team or hung around their Discord, you know they’re serious about reshaping how online communities connect. Their tweets are a great mix of thoughtful updates, product drops, and experiments around governance and identity. What I really like is how they make complex coordination ideas feel intuitive. Whether you're into onchain social, DAOs, or just building better spaces for your community, Towns always has something fresh to offer.

“A decentralized Discord for Web3”I’ve been using Towns for a while and really enjoy it. It feels like a Web3-native version of Discord, but with more control over the space and better integration with crypto. Managing communities is easy, and the on-chain tools like tipping and token-gating are super useful. Excited to see how it grows, especially with the upcoming airdrop.

“Claim forced me to stake”The claim button was very clearly broken and possibly intentional. I could only claim it via by staking which seemed very misleading. Now it's locked for 29 days before I can withdraw. Did not lose anything but also, felt misled.

“They did good but it wasn't enough”Idea was good, but after TGE the project has been deserted by users. Unfortunately, airdrop season and mercenaries are a tough crowd.
